The History of Nintendo Game & Watch: Before the Game Boy
The Nintendo Game & Watch series began in 1980 with Ball, a simple handheld electronic game developed under the direction of legendary Nintendo designer Gunpei Yokoi.
Unlike modern gaming consoles, each original Game & Watch featured a dedicated LCD display with fixed graphics. These systems did not require cartridges or downloadable games.
The series continued until 1991 and introduced several influential innovations.
Most notably, the 1982 Game & Watch version of Donkey Kong introduced Nintendo's cross-shaped directional pad, a design that would influence controllers for decades.
The dual-screen Multi Screen models also demonstrated a design concept Nintendo would revisit with the Nintendo DS.

Why Are Vintage Nintendo Game & Watch Consoles Collectible?
Original Game & Watch devices have become desirable because they represent Nintendo's earliest successful portable gaming era.
Unlike cartridge-based handhelds, each unit is a complete standalone gaming experience.
Collectors appreciate their distinctive designs, original LCD technology, nostalgic appeal, and historical importance.
Some collectors focus on obtaining every model from a particular series, while others search for complete-in-box examples with original packaging and instructions.
The most desirable pieces often combine excellent cosmetic condition, fully functioning electronics, and complete original accessories.
How to Identify an Authentic Nintendo Game & Watch
When purchasing a vintage Nintendo Game & Watch, authenticity and condition are essential.
Check the Nintendo branding, model number, original casing, screen layout, and button design. These details should match the documented original release.
Examine the LCD for missing segments, dark patches, or fading. Also check that the sound works and that every button responds correctly.
Battery compartments deserve special attention. Corrosion from old batteries can damage internal contacts and circuitry.
Collectors should also inspect the battery cover, as missing original covers can reduce completeness.
What Determines the Value of Vintage Game & Watch Handhelds?
Several factors influence collector demand:
-
Rarity: Some models and regional variants are harder to find.
-
Condition: Clean cases, working LCDs, and intact buttons are desirable.
-
Original packaging: Boxes, manuals, and inserts increase completeness.
-
Battery compartment: Corrosion-free contacts are preferable.
-
Functionality: Working sound, controls, and displays are important.
-
Historical significance: Landmark Nintendo designs often attract collector interest.
A complete, working original unit may appeal more strongly to collectors than a heavily worn or incomplete example.
Common Mistakes When Buying Vintage Game & Watch in the UAE
A frequent mistake is confusing original 1980s Game & Watch devices with Nintendo's modern commemorative Game & Watch releases from 2020 and 2021.
Although the newer editions celebrate Nintendo's heritage, they are different products from the original LCD handhelds.
Another mistake is overlooking screen defects. An old Game & Watch may power on but still have damaged LCD segments.
Buyers should also avoid assuming that all units include their original battery covers or packaging.
Finally, verify the exact model before purchasing, particularly when searching for rare Japanese editions or special designs.
